My Golf Game…or lack of

I started playing golf during the summer of 2005…and it’s my wife’s falut.  One day her sister called and said that her and her husband were going to Overton Park to play golf. My wife asked me and I said “…Golf?…Really?…who plays golf?…” We went and I had a blast. Later that day I was searching the web about golf clubs, putters, everything! I was hooked.

Since then I have developed a deep respect for the game and don’t go a day without thinking about how to improve my 20-25 handicap. I’ve come to the realization that I can’t improve unless I play more often.  Luckily the City of Memphis just opened a great 9-hole municipal course with a great practice facility about 10 minutes from work. It’s a great place to kill a lunch hour. The Links at Whitehaven has two putting greens, a driving range (a first for Memphis public courses) and a great short game area. I haven’t played the course, but I’ll let you know when I get a chance.

My clubs are nothing special. I carry a Callaway Big Bertha Driver (10* stiff), a couple of Ben Hogan hybrids (2 & 4 iron), and my irons are Snake Eyes 600 series with Rifle Project X2 (high launch) shafts. I carry 4 wedges – a 48*, 52*, 56* and a 60*. My putter is a used Scotty Cameron  Studio Design 2 – love it! My next purchase will probably be a more customized set of wedges. I’d like to find someone in the area that can determine what would be best for my game based on my swing and course conditions.

Thanks for reading and let me know how you got into golf. It’s a wonderful game and full of great stories and people.

Regards,
Tyler

I remember that great golf day. It was so cool. I think I won!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do really enjoy golf too, there just isn’t enough time to play. Maybe years and years from now when the girls are bigger we can all go and have fun.

Tyler, our stories are similar. I caught the bug in mid 2006 and am fixated with getting it right too – sometimes so much that everything else in life seems secondary. I came upon your blog by googling on the role of the right elbow.
I shot a 97 in my first outing last week and am working on getting this recalcitrant swing to behave. With woods, I have the same tendency as you – the dreaded push-slice.
I was wondering if you have been reading any material, and if so, are there any recommendations? I have pretty much based everything on what Lord Hogan says in his ‘Five Fundamentals’. I read ‘The Plane Truth’ and found it to be a little insufferable.
Well, maybe we’ll meet up for a game one day (I am in Los Angeles). Best of luck!

Nick:
Thanks for your comment and taking the time to read my blog. A 97 is great for your first outing! I haven’t played in a while but I keep practicing as much as I can.
I have read the Plane Truth and even bought the DVD’s and as much as I want a one plane swing, it just doesn’t feel right. I’ve also tried using the Tour Tempo but I haven’t put as much time into it as I want.
If you are ever in Memphis just shoot me an email and we’ll play some golf!
Regards,
Tyler

Don’t bet against the Spaniard!!!

Garcia is the favored golfer to score the most points for the Europeans in this event, and one look at his career record at the Ryder Cup shows why. The fiery Spaniard has played in four Ryder Cups, posting a 14-4-0 record overall, and he is a perfect 8-0-0 in foursomes.
